CRASH LEAVES A VINELAND MAN DEAD

An accident took place in Vineland that cost one man his life. Ronald Segers, of Vineland, died from the Sunday morning accident at East Chestnut Ave. and South Spring Rd. Matthew Parker, of Millville, was charged with driving under a suspended license. He was placed in the Cumberland County Jail. An investigation is on-going and more charges are possible.

NO JACKPOT WINNERS IN LAST WEEK'S LOTTERY DRAWINGS

The two major multi-state lotteries will see significant increases in their jackpots, after no one won on Friday and Saturday. The Friday drawing for the Mega Millions and Saturday Powerball netted no winners. The new Mega Millions jackpot is at $105 million, while Powerball has increase to $175 million. The two drawings will be held on Tuesday (Mega Millions) and Wednesday (Powerball).

REPORT: STATE BUDGET PROPOSAL WOULD SEE SOME FEDERAL DOLLARS LOST

A new report by the Star-Ledger shows that state stands to lose many millions in federal dollars based on Gov. Chris Christie's budget proposal. The paper says that the among the loses would be a federal program that provides dollars for Homeland Security based on how much the state puts in. Also, around $90 million would go away towards making homes more energy efficient. Finally, the state has removed its chance to get money for family-planning services based on the proposed cuts. Other cuts are being seen in after-school programs and libraries, according to the report.

UEZ PUBLIC HEARING TODAY ON POTENTIAL OF STATE HOLDING DOLLARS

A public hearing will be held today on the proposal of the state holding all of the Urban Enterprise Zone funds. State Senator Jeff Van Drew will chair this meeting as the chairman of the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee. Senator Van Drew said the panel will also assess the impact of Governor Christie's budget proposal, which redirects to the state millions of dollars in sales tax proceeds generated in designated urban areas and previously reinvested in those communities. The governor's proposed budget redirects $91 million to state coffers. The Urban Enterprise Zone Program was enacted in 1983 to stimulate economic growth in urban communities. The program has grown from its initial 10 zones, to 32 zones operating in 37 municipalities. The program offers a number of incentives to facilitate economic development, including permitting businesses to charge half the sales tax rate on purchases. Sales tax revenue generated was historically dedicated for use in those zones.

FORMER CONGRESSMAN BOB FRANKS, 58

Former New Jersey Congressman Bob Franks passed away Friday night at the age of 58. Franks had a form of aggressive cancer, and died at a New York City cancer hospital on Friday evening. Franks represented the 7th District in Washington for the state of New Jersey, and he is widely credited for leading the republican party back to prominence in the state following the election of Jim Florio as governor. Governor Chris Christie called Franks "an American patriot".

NJ AMERICAN WATER COMPANY PROPOSED HUGE RATE HIKE

If you are a customer of the New Jersey American Water Company, you may have to pay a lot more for the water service you enjoy. The company has submitted a rate hike request to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities that amounts to a 13.6 percent increase for the average residential customer. About 2.5 million customers of the water company are in South Jersey, including some in Cape May County, including Avalon. The last rate hike for the utility was in December, 2008.

TEACHERS PROTEST AT LOBIONDO FUNDRAISER

New Jersey Congressman Frank LoBiondo held a fundraiser Friday night, but the real noise was made outside as dozens of teachers showed up to oppose Governor Chris Christie's proposed cuts to public education. Christie appeared at the LoBiondo fundraiser, and the teachers showed up outside of the Mays Landing Country Club to show their displeasure with Christie's proposed cuts. Teachers around the state say the cuts could compromise education standards, and result in them losing their jobs.

Two republicans who are seeking nominations for seats on the Cape May County freeholder board will turn in their nominating petitions Monday morning. Jerry Thornton and Sue Sheppard will be at the county clerk's office Monday at 11:30am to turn in their petitions. They will run in the republican primary against Ralph Bakley and John McCann. This is expected to be a very contentious election, and has split the local republican party in Cape May County.

In Lower Township, council seats are up for grabs but no candidates had expressed interest in running. The only democrat elected in Lower Township, Wayne Mazurek, announced he would not seek re-election to his council seat.

WILDWOOD COMPLETES BOARDWALK PROJECT

Wildwood city officials gathered Friday on the resort's boardwalk to officially announce the completion of a major boardwalk reconstruction project. The city has wrapped up a redecking of the boardwalk between Cedar and Oak Avenues. Former Wildwood mayor Ernie Troiano was credited with getting this project underway. The three current Wildwood city commissioners joined State Senator Jeff Van Drew for a ribbon cutting event on the boardwalk.

VAN DREW TAKES TO SUPERMARKET LISTENING TOUR

Senator Jeff Van Drew, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, announced today that he will embark on a district-wide listening tour on the proposed FY 2011 state budget later this month to hear from real people about their concerns.

The senator will travel to supermarkets across the 1st Legislative District to speak with residents about Governor Christie’s proposed spending plan. His announcement comes at the start of the budget review process by members of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, who began hearing from state department heads in Trenton this week.

“This is a painful budget that will affect real people across South Jersey, and I want to hear from them,” said Senator Van Drew (D-Cape May/Atlantic/Cumberland). “Their input will be taken back to Trenton to be part of the process as we assess the full impact of the governor’s plan and consider alternatives.”

The senator will also open the discussion to any issue on the minds of his constituents in Cape May, Cumberland and Atlantic counties.

“Whether residents want to voice concerns or provide suggestions for how we can do better in Trenton, I’m willing to listen,” said Senator Van Drew.

First District Assemblymen Nelson Albano and Matt Milam (D-Cumberland/Cape May/Atlantic) will be present at some locations for constituents to speak with as well.

MIDDLE POLICE ARREST MAN FOR THREATENING EX-GIRLFRIEND

A man was arrested for brandishing a weapon during an argument with his ex-girlfriend. Investigation revealed Bryan Williams went to a home on Cochran street, after having an argument with his ex-girlfriend on the phone. While at the home the argument became physical. Williams was charged with aggravated assault and two weapons possession charges. He was placed in Cape May County Correctional Center on $100,000 Bail.

ONE CENT TAX INCREASE TO BE INTRODUCED IN OCEAN CITY

A small tax increase will be coming in Ocean City. A one cent tax increase will be introduced during the council meeting on Thursday. Ocean City Administrator Jim Rutala told Coastal Broadcasting that the city has found significant savings by changing healthcare providers and reducing utility costs. Rutala believes the city is in a good position going forward to continue and keep costs down, along with taxes.

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP CONTINUES TO WORK THROUGH BUDGET PROCESS

The Middle Township Committee is working on finding more reductions in its budget, while negotiating contracts. Committeeman Dan Lockwood told Coastal Broadcasting that the township is about $300,000 away from coming under the capped tax increase. Middle Township is negotiating three contracts this year, with police, dispatchers, and public works. Severe flooding has impacted residents as well and township is looking at ways to try and solve those problems. Lockwood said more ideas need to be explored and cuts need to come from all areas of the budget.

SOMERS POINT LOOKING AT 6.7 CENT TAX INCREASE

A budget was introduced with a significant tax hike in Somers Point. The tax rate in the city would go up 6.7 cents, according to a report by The Press of Atlantic City. Budget hearings will begin on Thursday and will continue to be held before the budget is adopted in June. The proposal would use $1.2 million of its surplus; which would leave the city with only $200,000 left.

SHOTS FIRED IN VINELAND, 12 TAKEN IN BY POLICE

A man was shot in the arm on Thursday near Landis Park in Vineland. Police there say that Wilbor Hopewell, of Vineland, was treated and released from the South Jersey Healthcare-Regional Medical Center. Twelve people ranging from 16 to 22 years old have been brought in for questioning by police. The incident took place during the afternoon near the 500 block of Park Drive. No charges have yet been filed in the case.

A new plan has been announced by Gov. Chris Christie that would cap public college's tuition increase at four percent, or they would stand to lose a significant amount of their state aid. NorthJersey.com reports that the plan is being looked at to keep the school's increases within reason, especially as the state cuts in other areas. Some school leaders say this will interfere with their ability to provide all of the necessary services.

LIBRARIES MAY HAVE TO CUT FREE INTERNET SERVICE

State aid cuts could chop free Internet service from libraries across the state. The Press of Atlantic City reports that the aid cuts would force libraries to cut back as well. Free Internet service appears to be one area that could have to go. Record numbers of people are using libraries these days. The report says that libraries would be receiving $3.7 million, which represents a 74 percent cut. Other services would likely be cut, like magazine subscriptions to the Cape May County Library system, according to the report.

POLL: SLIGHT MAJORITY SUPPORT HEALTHCARE BILL

Landmark healthcare legislation that was passed by the federal government has the state's support. A new Rutgers-Eagleton poll shows that 48 percent of the state approves of the measure, while 40 percent do not. The remaining 12 percent are undecided on the bill at this time. The last poll taken by Rutgers-Eagleton on the topic was in February, and nearly two-thirds thought Congress should have started again from scratch.

SWEENEY THREATENS TAX ON RICH IF NO BUDGET DEAL REACHED

A new report says the Senate President Steve Sweeney wants Gov. Chris Christie to come to terms on a budget agreement for the state. MyFoxPhilly.com reports that Sweeney has said if he does not get his way, he will reintroduce what was known as the "millionaire's tax," which is a surtax on people earning more than $400,000 a year. The tax expired before the end of the Gov. Jon Corzine tenure. Christie has said he would not sign any such tax increase into law.

SUPREME COURT: SUMMER RENTERS DON'T NEED TO BE WARNED OF DANGEROUS CONDITIONS

The state's Supreme Court ruled that real estate agents are not obligated to warn short term and seasonal renters of potentially dangerous conditions within the property they wish to rent. The split decision by the court said that agents are only obligated when a buyer is looking to purchase a home. A lawsuit was filed from a summer house in Stone Harbor and a rent wanted the agent to be liable for his fall down some steps on the home's deck.

OCEAN CITY BEACH PROJECT WITHIN COUPLE WEEKS OF COMPLETION

A large scale beach fill in Ocean City will be wrapping up within the next few weeks. Administrator Jim Rutala tells Coastal Broadcasting that the beach fill is coming close to completion. The $17 million fill is being funded mostly by federal dollars. Over 1.8 million cubic yards of sand will be pumped on the Ocean City beaches – the largest project in this community since 1992 when the federal beach replenishment program started. Beaches there were damaged from the Veteran's Day storm. Once the fill is completed, other Cape May County communities waiting for fills, like Avalon and Sea Isle City, will be available to get their fills.

SOUTH JERSEY HEALTHCARE TO OPEN NEW CANCER CENTER

Construction on a new cancer center in Cumberland County is wrapped up and is ready to be opened. South Jersey Healthcare will be opening that part of their operation on Friday. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. at the new location at 1505 W. Sherman Ave. in Vineland.

MIDDLE POLICE SEEKING ASSAULT SUSPECT

An assault took place behind the Sunoco gas station in Rio Grande on Monday night. Police are looking for four men who were said to be involved in the attack. The 48-year-old victim went to a nearby WaWa to clean himself up following the attack. Police were then notified. Authorities released only that the four men were white and in their early 20's. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Middle Township Police Department at 609-465-8700.

STATE EXAMINING LAYOFF PLAN BY WILDWOOD, DEMARZO ON LIST

The City of Wildwood is waiting to hear back from the state's Civil Service Commission on a layoff proposal that would cost 41 workers their jobs in the city. One of the people on that list is Wildwood Mayor Gary DeMarzo for his police job that he has chosen to give up, due to a court order. The plan was sent two weeks ago and the state is within its 30 day review period. No layoffs may occur without the state's approval. The city is using the layoffs as one part of plan to reduce the overall budget. Commissioner Chip Harshaw says that the eventually layoff list will be decided on what the state allows the city to do.

REFERENDUM LIKELY COMING ON ATLANTIC CITY TAX BREAK FOR REVEL

A potential $300 million tax break for Revel is likely heading before voters. A Superior Court judge ordered the city to begin the process of getting a public referendum ready. City residents have already voted no once on the issue. The city tax break is being offered to make it easier for the casino to get up and running. The current financial climate has a lot of people concerned about the long-term financial viability of this massive casino.

REVIEW TO TAKE PLACE OF CONCERT TICKETS BEING STORED AWAY BY GOVERNMENT

Gov. Chris Christie wants to know why some concert tickets are not being made available to the public and are set aside for certain political figures in the state. Ralph Marra, who worked with Christie in the U.S. Attorney's office, will be heading up this investigation. Bloomberg News was the first to report last year that 22 elected officials, including then Gov. Jon Corzine, had 350 tickets available to them for 15 concerts. These tickets were never offered to the public and were set aside for the lawmakers. The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority said they were paid face value for the tickets, and that there was no problem with the practice.

Gov. Chris Christie is apparently not making many friends. A new poll shows that more people in the state have an unfavorable view of the governor than a positive one. The new Rutgers-Eagleton poll shows Christie will only a 33 percent favorable rating, compared to a 37 percent unfavorable. Also, 42 percent compared to 50 percent approved of the budget proposal by Christie. The poll shows that Christie's approval numbers are directly tied to budget and there are a lot of significant cuts that have caught people's attention.

DEMOCRATS DISPUTE SOME OF CHRISTIE'S BUDGET CUTS

Budget hearings began this week in the Assembly, as the state moves toward passing a new fiscal budget by the end of June. The Democrat controlled house is concerned about the budget proposal by Gov. Chris Christie, and they believe taxes will be going up as a result. Assembly Budget Committee Chairman Lou Greenwald pointed to the just over $1.25 billion in cuts to school and municipal aid as a direct way taxes will be going up. Budget hearings will continue over the next couple of weeks, with different department heads being called in front of the budget committee.

BOEING OFFICIALLY WELCOMED TO MILLVILLE AIRPORT

Gov. Chris Christie and other state, regional and local officials praised what they called the beginning of a state-wide economic recovery at a ribbon cutting ceremony opening a Boeing aircraft modification facility at Millville Municipal Airport. Officials ranging from Millville Mayor Tim Shannon to state Senate President Steve Sweeney heralded the new Boeing facility as a major development, not only for a struggling state, but also for Cumberland County, which is currently wallowing in 13 percent unemployment. Elected officials from across the county have stated the program will bring 100 new jobs to the area. Boeing in February approved a deal with the Delaware River & Bay Authority to lease two hangars at Millville Municipal Airport for four years, with the option of four additional years, to perform modification work on CH-47F Chinook helicopters.

COUNTY FINISHING UP EMERGENCY ROAD WORK

Emergency road work is getting finished up in the county. The $1.2 million project was brought on by the severe weather the county got in the winter. South State Inc., of Bridgeton, has been doing the work. There are many sections of roadways that need to be addressed, however, due to funding limitations or upcoming utility work, only a limited number of roadways can be addressed. Some of the roadways selected to be repaired under this program are:

· Dias Creek Road from Mechanic Street to Shunpike Road in Middle Township
· Ocean Drive from 8th Street to 11th Street in Avalon
· Corsons Tavern Road from Kings Highway north to the sod farm in Dennis Township
· Court House – South Dennis Road from US Route 9 to Winding Way in Middle Township
· Ocean Drive from NJ Route 109 to Middle Thorofare Bridge in Lower Township
· Roosevelt Boulevard at Vernon Road ( Garden State Parkway Southbound Exit Ramp) in Upper Township

Most of the work under this repair program is expected to be completed by Memorial Day Weekend, weather permitting. Other roads not being addressed by this contract will be patched and repaired by the County Road Department.

COUNTY BEGINS ROAD WORK IN SEA ISLE CITY

Road improvement projects are beginning this week in Sea Isle City. Resurfacing work is happening on Landis Ave. from JFK Blvd. to 54th St. Concrete gutter work is currently underway and the initial three block closure from JFK Boulevard to 44th Street will begin on April 12th. All work is expected to be completed by Memorial Day weekend. No sidewalk work will be performed as part of this project therefore access will be available to all businesses and residences within the work zone by means of the sidewalks. Parking for businesses and residences will be on the side streets. The total cost of the project is more than $750,000 and the contract was awarded to South State, Inc. in Bridgeton.

MAN ARRESTED FOR THREATENING EIGHT-WEEK-OLD CHILD

A Wildwood Crest man was arrested following a domestic violence call. A woman said that Saturnino Nunez-Pena threatened her and her eight-week-old child. Police say the man allegedly threatened her life with a knife. Nunez was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, endangering the welfare of a child, and other weapons possession charges. Nunez's bail was set at $30,000.

REPORT: RESORTS FACING POTENTIAL OF HAVING TO CLOSE

A new owner may be needed to keep Resorts open. The Press of Atlantic City reports the casino has a "severe cash shortfall," and may need to shut down while it seeks a new owner. A company spokesman told the paper that the casino is in no danger of closing. The New Jersey Casino Control Commission released that the casino suffered an $18 million gross operating loss in 2009. Resorts was the first ever casino opened in the resort.

OVER A DOZEN PUBLIC JOB CUTS IN MILLVILLE

Millville is looking for savings in its budget and layoffs are going to help them get there. The cuts are coming from different departments, with the exception of public safety. The plan also would make city hall a four-day work week. The city is trying to avoid a tax increase and doing all it can to cut back, without having a reduction in essential services.

WELCOME STRUCTURES INTO CAPE MAY TO BE REMOVED

The two structures that welcome people into Cape May are being moved to elsewhere in the city. Many critics have said the lighthouse looking structures are ugly and do not represent what Cape May should look like. City officials plan on moving the two somewhere else in the city. They were placed there as apart of a larger gateway project; those dollars have been all spent at this point.

MAN CHARGED IN VINELAND RAMADA MURDER PLEADS NOT GUILTY

A man accused of killing his co-worker at the Ramada Inn in Vineland has plead not guilty. Wade Featherston was arraigned on murder, and aggravated assault charges. Featherston is charged with killing Robert Costello, both of Illinois, while the two were traveling together. The two men were traveling to learn from a tattoo and piercing shop in the area. He remains in the Cumberland County Jail.

EXTENSION GIVEN BY CHRISTIE FOR SALARY FREEZE AGREEMENT

Gov. Chris Christie is going to provide more time for school districts and local union leadership to agree to a pay freeze for the next budget year. Christie said 115 of the over 600 districts have agreed to some sort of a freeze at this point. The deadline was initially on Monday, but the deadline has been extended to June 30. School budgets goes out to a vote on April 20. School districts that accomplish a wage freeze will receiving some additional state aid back in return.

PRIVATIZATION TASK FORCE BEGINS FIRST OF THREE MEETINGS TODAY

A task force that is looking to create some savings in the state, will hold a public hearing today. Gov. Chris Christie has asked the group to find $50 million in savings for the state. The public hearing today is being held in Trenton. The next two hearings are being held on the next two Wednesdays in Summit and Camden respectively. The task force is being head up by former Congressman Dick Zimmer.

MAN CHARGED WITH PULLING GUN DURING PARTY

A party was cut short when a Vineland man pulled an AK-47. The News of Cumberland County reports that Terrence Martin was arrested for allegedly point the gun at people at the Bridgeton party. Martin was charged with aggravated assault, and three weapons possession charges. Police recovered the gun in question. Martin was placed in the Cumberland County Jail on $100,000 bail.

A Mullica Hills late night crash claimed the lives of two women. The Press of Atlantic City reports that the accident took place along Route 30 on Wednesday night. Simpson had a number of outstanding warrants in Middle Township and North Wildwood. During his arrest, he was found in possession of prescription narcotics and faces two drug possession charges. Bail was set at $50,000. Additional charges could be filed against Simpson pending an autopsy and toxicology results.

Officials are going to get their chance to try and get UEZ funding back. State Senator Jeff Van Drew, who chairs the state's Community and Urban Affairs Committee, will be the chair of the meeting. Gov. Chris Christie said in his budget message he wants to keep all of the UEZ money this year while the programs are looked at. This money will help close an $11 billion budget hole. A total of 37 municipalities take part in the UEZ program.

A big bail increase was kicked in for a man accused of stealing a vehicle and striking and killing a Vineland man with it. The bail was Michael Jones is now $1.25 million, which is up from $750,000. Jones has been arrested 52 times and been convicted 21 times in his adult life. Police say that the 45-year-old stole a paramedic vehicle and took authorities on a chase. Jones struck and killed Alfred Costantino during that incident. He faces first-degree murder and aggravated manslaughter charges.

Gov. Chris Christie took the $450,000 left over from his inauguration and donated it three charities. The three organizations that received the check as the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Daytop, and the New Jersey State Family Readiness Council. Christie said he wasn't going to use that money for any political purposes. A check presentation was made on Wednesday.

NOT GUILTY: MILLVILLE MAN AVOIDS MURDER CHARGE

A jury returned a non-guilty verdict for a first-degree murder charge. A Millville man had been charged in the death of 55-year-old Hamilton Blackshear, of Bridgeton. Andrew Swinton was found guilty of attempt burglary, attempted robbery, and weapons offenses charges. He avoids the potential of life in prison by being acquitted of murder and armed robbery. The second-degree charges that Swinton faces could place him in jail for between seven and 10 years.

CHRISTIE: I DIDN'T WANT TO CUT TOURISM PROMOTION

Sometimes there are no good things to cut. Gov. Chris Christie told Coastal Broadcasting during an interview on Wednesday that he didn't want to cut tourism promotion money, but with a huge deficit, the tough decisions always hurt. Christie is attempting to close an $11 billion hole in the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, and he chopped $2 million in tourism funding for this current fiscal year to keep the budget in line. Christie said he didn't want to cut to areas like tourism funding, or for the schools, but tough decisions had to be made and those choices don't make you feel good.

OUT OF STATE FUGITIVE ARRESTED BY LOWER POLICE

An arrest was made on Tuesday on a fugitive warrant by Lower Township Police. Lower Township Police say that Wayne Chadwick was picked up by them when they received a 9-1-1 call of a disorderly male who wouldn't leave the Cohwen's Ink Emporium. Police discovered he had outstanding warrants from Philadelphia on contempt of a protection order, stalking violations, terroristic threats, and harassment. He was placed in the Cape May County Jail on $35,000 and awaiting extradition.

Governor Chris Christie today issued the following statement on President Obama's proposal to open the Atlantic Coast to oil and natural gas exploration and offshore drilling:

"I oppose the idea of drilling off the coast of New Jersey," Governor Christie said, noting that the President's proposal thus far includes areas off Virginia and the northern tip of Delaware near Cape May in the Delaware Bay. "New Jersey's coastline is one of our economic engines and I would have to be really convinced of both the economic viability and environmental safety of oil and gas exploration off our coast. At this point, I'm not convinced of either.''

PUBLIC HEARING TO BE HELD ON SPORTS BETTING NEXT WEEK

The Senate Economic Growth Committee will hold a public hearing at the Atlantic City Convention Center on legislation to allow for legalized sports wagering in New Jersey. The hearing is being held on April 5. State Senator Jeff Van Drew is a sponsor of the bill. The bill would ask voters to approve a constitutional amendment to legalize sports wagering at New Jersey’s casinos and horse-racing tracks. The bill would permit wagers to be placed on professional, college, or amateur sports or athletic events, either in-person of from any other location using telephone, Internet or other means. The bill would prohibit wagers to be placed on college games that take place in New Jersey or on any game in which a New Jersey college team participates. The bill was recently approved by the Economic Growth Committee in February by a vote of 4-0, with one abstention. Under current law, constitutional amendments require an additional public hearing, to give the public another chance to testify on the bill, before it goes to the full Senate for consideration.

MENENDEZ COMMENTS ON POTENTIAL OFF-SHORE DRILLING

Today, U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), a leading proponent of transitioning America to alternative, domestic fuels and a staunch defender of the coastline released the following statement:

"I have let the administration know that if they do not protect New Jersey from the effects of coastal drilling in the climate change bill, then my vote is in question. I am deeply concerned about the threat coastline drilling poses to the Jersey Shore's economy and to the potential for new jobs and energy savings that can be harnessed in a clean energy economy. If issues like coastline drilling are being promoted to gain Republican votes and support from oil companies, then we need to know exactly how much support it will actually deliver -- this can't be a case of giving up something for nothing.

"While I am pleased that the Administration will be conducting an environmental review before proceeding on lease sales potentially close to the Jersey Shore, I am concerned that it has not taken this area out of its five year plan pending an environmental review -- as it is doing for the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas in Alaska. I expect a serious and thorough review. If it turns out to be nothing more than a rubber stamp, then this announcement will amount to yet another no-questions-asked handout for rich oil companies. In that scenario, the lease sales will go forward and the coastlines of Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey will be under threat. Even Virginia will not be happy because it gets drilling in its waters, but not any revenue sharing. Only big oil companies would win.

"I look forward to working with the Administration to make sure this environmental review is done comprehensively, but I will also be asking for an economic impact review. Drilling in Virginia waters is less than 100 miles from the New Jersey coastline. Approximately 60 percent of New Jersey’s $38 billion tourism industry comes from the Jersey Shore and the state’s multi-billion dollar fishing industry would also be threatened by the specter of a potential oil spill. At the very least New Jersey deserves a 125 mile buffer from drilling, just like Florida received in the announced deal.

"I am also concerned that the Administration will be doing studies to determine whether further exploration should happen all along the Mid and Southern Atlantic. That raises the possibility of drilling in Delaware waters, just 10 miles away from New Jersey.

"Instead of expanding coastline drilling, we should be focused on developing a 21st century green economy. We cannot drill our way out of this problem. Even the Bush Administration’s Energy Information Administration estimated opening all out-shores to drilling would have no effect on gas prices. Instead of making rich oil companies richer we should be competing with Europe, Japan and China to win the competition to supply the world with next generation green technologies. Buying hybrids for the federal government and raising fuel economy standards is a start but we could and should do more.

"It is also troubling that it appears the lease sales in Virginia could go forward and interfere with the Navy’s Virginia Capes Operating Area, a critical military training and testing area. At a time when we are fighting two wars we should not be compromising military readiness no matter what oil companies want.”
